Alouette Lake Fishing Report – May 20, 2025
Fish Report – Alouette Lake, Golden Ears Park, BC – May 20, 2025

Tried something new on this trip—dropper weights—and it’s safe to say I’m officially on board. With spring barely settling in on the West Coast, the weather was a mixed bag: light showers turning into sudden downpours throughout the day. But that didn’t stop the bite.

🎣 Why Dropper Weights?

Dropper weights have been on my radar for a while. I’ve seen more and more lake anglers stash away their downriggers in favour of this simpler method. After trying it myself, I can see why—and I agree with the hype.

Pros:

  • Quick depth adjustments on the fly

  • Lighter, cheaper, and simpler than a downrigger setup

  • Better bite visibility since you're not clipped to a release

  • And surprisingly… more bites!

Con:
The only downside? When you're reeling in and hit the dropper clip, you need to pause and remove it. That brief pause takes a couple of seconds of pressure off the fish—and sometimes, that’s all it takes to lose it. I'd say it was a 50/50 chance of landing the fish once I hit that clip. But despite that, it still felt worth it.

This setup is especially ideal for smaller vessels like kayaks. Less gear, more action, and a great way to stay mobile.

🔧 Best Setup of the Day:
  • Morning: 1 oz dropper weight, 70 ft setup, descending 15–20 ft on the reel counter
    Instant bites.

  • Later in the day: Switched to a 3 oz weight to reach deeper—that was the ticket.

Lures & Baits:

  • Homemade cured corn (Pro-cure red, Mike Lunker Garlic spray, Anise Bloody-Tuna gel, Flaked Tuna with Whole Corn)

  • Gibbs Dog-Tail Dodger

  • Teton Tackle Jet Dodgers

  • Silver Slayer's Minnow Body Lure – this one was 🔥

🎥 Wrapping It Up

Lost more fish than I could count… but also had one of the most action-packed days I’ve had in a while. Dropper weights are now a solid option in my playbook—especially for spring transitions when fish are adjusting their depth throughout the day.

This will make for a fun episode, so stay tuned for the full video on my channel. Be sure to check out the photos and gear list in the products section.
